Hi my name is Richard and I have been training at Ann Arbor Mixed Martial Arts for about 7 months. I am a little bit older than most of the guys here and one of the benefits that I found is the regular working out here includes stretching and progressive resistance. I used to have a lot of knee, elbow and shoulder pain that has all gone away.
Now I spend 4 nights a week here which I enjoy a lot. It’s a sport you can make whatever you want out of. I have ended up losing 15 pounds. Even while playing hockey etc. I struggled losing weight. I think it’s a combination of all the activities and keeping myself away from refrigerator.
You can make this whatever you want. You can make it as easy or as hard as you want. If you like competition you can make it a sport. It’s a lot of fun because its more than just working out. You are learning new skills. Jiu Jitsu, Kickboxing, and MMA are so diverse. It’s something that I would never have thought was realistic for someone like myself. It’s a lot of fun and there is camaraderie that goes along with it so on a regular basis you’ve got guys pushing you.
Just do it add something new to your life every year and this is a good thing to try.
Hi my name is Manny Chiok. I am a student at WCC and I have been training at Ann Arbor Mixed Martial Arts for 2 years. I started training because my friend got into a fight and I wanted to help him out but I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t want to be in trouble but now that I’ve been training here I know I could have helped him out without getting anyone hurt.
My girlfriend was encouraging me to get started and then I lost 40 pounds. I feel good and have a lot more energy. In High School I actually was kind of bad but when I came to the gym I was more calm and I didn’t party as much because I needed to come here.
Well if someone is being bullied, they should definitely come here because it is never going to stop unless you stop it yourself. No one’s going to stop it for you.
When I came here I was actually a 190 pounds. I remember punching a bag for the first time and I was sweating like crazy. Everyone just seemed so calm. I could barely breath. I remember Coach Danny would always check up on me and ask how I was doing. He made me feel just like part of the family. The workout here is different. I played soccer. I ran for miles and miles and miles. I came here and punched the bag for 5 minutes and was dying. It’s a different experience, if you keep going you will lose a lot of weight, get in shape and everyone here treats you like family.
Hi my name is Ryan and I have been training at An Arbor Mixed Martial Arts for 2 years. I used to work out at a regular gym maybe once or twice a week. I did that for years off and on. I would gain weight and lose weight. I would go through the yoyo and I never could maintain.
I have been interested in mixed martial arts and watching the UFC for about a decade. I got to the point where I wanted to see if I could lose some weight doing something different. I told myself I was going to try MMA for just 3 days. If I wasn’t comfortable I was going to quit, that was the commitment I made to myself. After the second day I decided I was going to try this for the long haul. I was really impressed with the gym and all the people made me feel comfortable and it was a really good fit for me.
You never know if you can do it until you try. Leave your ego at the door. You are basically only competing against yourself. Yyou don’t have to worry about anybody else just see what you can do and I imagine most people would like this if they give it a try. It’s a family atmosphere where you really get to know everybody and you trust your training partners that you work with.
My life is a lot better. Getting up and down the stairs in the morning is easier I just generally feel better. I have more self-esteem and more confidence. From a self-defense perspective and just being physically fit. When I started this I couldn’t even jump rope once, not even once, I tripped over my feet. Now I can do it for straight minute, so if you believe in yourself there is nowhere to go but up.
My name is Danny McIntyre and I have been training in martial arts for a little over 8 years. I am now a Kick boxing, Brazilian Jujitsu and Fight Team Coach at Ann Arbor Mixed Martial Arts. I was 23 when I started training and it was actually my mom that got me into martial arts, she had been training in Tae KwonD o and she encouraged me to jump in the class to adopt a healthier life style.
I realized that I loved training the first day of jiu – jitsu. I grew up playing sports from elementary through high school. After high school I didn’t play organized sports anymore. I missed up the physical activity I missed the competition of it and martial arts was just another way for me to feel that competition again.
Ann Arbor Mixed Martial Arts changed my life dramatically. It taught me to exercise and live a healthy life style physically, mentally and spiritually. Now, helping others progress as martial artists and people in general is great. Once you start to teach you build bonds and relationships with people that doesn’t stop at the gym.
Martial arts helped me with the passing of my father. It was a difficult time in my life. Training and competing was an outlet for me. It was something he encouraged me to do. I think it really helped me leave everything outside of the gym. When I came in here, I just cleared my head.
Some people want to fight because they want to be world champion, some people want to fight because they want to conquer fear and challenge themselves and test their skills. You get all sorts of reasons. I tell people who want to get the cage that it takes a lot of time and hard work. I’ve been competing for over 7 years.
If you think it is something you would like to try, put your foot in the door. The worst thing that can happen is that you realize you don’t like it. At the end of the day, with the group of coaches and students here, I would find it very hard to believe that somebody would not want to continue training after spending a day with us.

Low in Confidence
It is very easy to get discouraged. In fact when most people say they want to learn self defense, what they are really saying is that they would like to feel more empowered. Maybe standing up to someone who has been taking advantage of you or just having the guts to ask that person out that you have been to scared to talk with.
Lacking in Discipline
Have you tried every work out imaginable but been unable to stick to anything. It comes down to discipline. You don’t need anything fancy to get in shape. Every class you are challenged to be better than yesterday. Success is a habit.
Bored with the Gym scene
Every class will provide you with something new. Whether it is a new submission or a superman punch, you will always be challenged with something new. Being a Combat Athlete requires a variety of skills and physical attributes. Not a typical day on the treadmill, that’s for sure!
